Roads and trucking have become an increasingly important part of the grain transportation system. Roads and highways, built in the 1930s and improved afterwards, have facilitated the move toward handling grain through inland terminals. Trucking and roads have provided the alternative to the railway branch-lines that used to be so important.

The shift to longer hauls and larger trucks has not come without a cost. The heavy "Super-B" tractor-trailer units put a lot of stress on the rural road structures, even as declining rural populations and dwindling municipal tax revenues make road maintenance difficult.
